TF Card vs MicroSD — Is There Actually a Difference?

In short

There is no physical difference: TF (TransFlash) and MicroSD are the same form factor, 15 × 11 × 1 mm. TransFlash was the original name when the format was introduced; MicroSD is the name adopted after the SD Association standardised it, and SDHC and SDXC extend it to higher capacities. Both names are still in commercial use, which is why buyers searching for one term find suppliers using the other. What matters in a specification is not the name but the capacity, the speed class and the silicon grade behind it.

The naming, in order

NameCapacity rangeWhat it means
TransFlash (TF)Up to 2GB in the original definitionThe original name for the format
MicroSDUp to 2GBRenamed after SD Association adoption
MicroSDHC4GB to 32GBHigh Capacity — SD 2.0 and above
MicroSDXC64GB to 2TBExtended Capacity — exFAT formatted

What this means when you order

  • Ask for the capacity and speed class, not the name — "TF card" and "MicroSD card" describe the same object.
  • Above 32GB the card is SDXC and is exFAT formatted by default; check that your device supports exFAT.
  • Older devices built for MicroSD may not address SDXC capacities — a real compatibility trap when replacing cards in existing hardware.
  • The grade of the flash inside is a separate question from the name, and it is the one that affects field behaviour.

Why we use "TF card"

Because that is the term most of our B2B buyers search and specify with, particularly in dashcam, camera and device-integration supply chains. We write "MicroSD class" alongside it where the SD naming matters, so both conventions resolve to the same product.

Frequently asked questions

Will a card labelled MicroSD work in a device specified for TF?

Yes — same physical and electrical format. What to check is whether the device supports the capacity class (SDHC versus SDXC), not the name on the label.

Do I need SDXC for 64GB and above?

Yes. 64GB and above is SDXC, formatted exFAT. Confirm your host device supports exFAT before specifying it.

Does the name affect price?

No. Capacity, silicon grade and speed class affect price. The name is a naming convention.
