What MOQ is protecting
MOQ is not an arbitrary gate. It reflects the setup cost of a production run: machine programming, material staging, test setup and line changeover all cost the same whether the run is 500 or 50,000 units. Below a certain quantity the setup dominates the unit cost, which is why small orders are priced disproportionately.

- Ask what a standard configuration in the same capacity would cost — often the constraint is the customisation, not the product
- Ask about consolidating capacities into one run
- Ask whether a phased schedule works: a smaller first batch at a higher unit price, then volume
- Ask what the MOQ would be without the bespoke element
